President’s report 31st Jan 2011

Well 2011 has well and truly started as we near the end of January. The fame of our Schoolies Program to Cambodia continues to build with Judy being asked to be the speaker for the New Generations slot at the District Conference at the end of March. Well done Judy, Janet and Ross. Any members who want to come to the conference form 25th to 27th March please let me know this Thursday.

Any members interested in being involved in the next Schoolies Program this November let Judy know. We are aiming to get 20 schoolies involved and will need about six members or friends to accompany them to Siem Reap. The schoolies program also made the local ‘Weekly’ newspaper.

Last Sunday a number of members and friends also finished off the latest lot of CAT sampler kits. Many hands made light work and we were finished in no time. Another $1,000 towards the Club’s community account. While doing the kits we also made the decision to hold a ‘business type’ function on Friday 26th August. Now we have a date we can start organising speakers etc. New member Kath Luty is leading the charge. Any members who want to be involved in organising the function let me know.

We are hoping that the guest speaker this week will be Maddy Stroot to talk to us about her year in Germany. I am sure Maddy has a few stories to tell us. At the 17th February meeting Roy Travis will speak to the Club about the Cambodian Children’s Fund.

A reminder that the first big event for the Nepean Cluster is the 106th Birthday of Rotary at George Pentland Botanic Gardens. The funds raised from this event will go to Flood Relief. It was a great night last year and should be even better this year. The cost is $25.00 per person and it starts at 6.30pm. The event is fully catered and entertainment will be provided by Maurie’s Jolly Rollers. Let me know if you want to come. You can pay at the meeting this Thursday.

See you Thursday!!

President’s report 18th Jan 2011

A belated Happy New Year to you all! I hope you all have had a good summer so far. We had a great start to the year with our first club meeting for the year on 6th January at Kirks in Mornington. Members were joined by family and friends and past members Alan Gamble and Rod Hanson. The lunch was followed by a visit and chat at Ian and Mary’s place in Mornington. Then on Sunday we had the belated Christmas/New Year Party at my place. A good afternoon was had by all with the children enjoying the pool even though the temperature did not get above 24 degrees. It was a good opportunity for new and old members and friends of Rotary to mix and enjoy each other’s company.

This Thursday sees the departure of Orla McAlinden the Exchange student we are sponsoring to go to Brazil. There have been a few concerns regarding Orla’s host family as they are in the area where the devastating mudslides have occurred killing over 500 people. But arrangements are being made for Orla to go to another place until the permanent hosts can return to their house or other hosts can be arranged.

Last Saturday Maddy Stroot returned from Germany to the welcoming arms of her family. I am sure we will hear more about Maddy’s adventures over the coming months.

We have all been shocked and hit with compassion for the people affected by the floods in Queensland and Victoria. The members will discuss at this week’s meeting what contribution the Club can make to the flood relief efforts. A start has been made with the takings and donations from the Bunnings Sausage Sizzles last Friday and this Friday going to the Flood relief. If any members or friends can assist at this Friday’s sizzle please contact Judy or Janet.

At this week’s meeting Archie Slamet will also talk to the members about possible support to a family in Indonesia to get a cochlear implant for a girl. Other Clubs may also being willing to provide support.

The Club needs a new design for its club banner so if you are feeling artistic or have someone in your family who might want to propose a design please send it to me. There might even be a small prize for the winning design. Entries close at our second meeting in February.

For those of you who have not heard the Board has asked me to take on the Presidency for 2011-12 which I have agreed to do. Ross Bird has kindly offered to be President in 2012-13. Ross and David will continue on in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer for 2011-12.

A reminder that the first big event for the Nepean Cluster is the 106th Birthday of Rotary at George Pentland Botanic Gardens. The funds raised from this event will also go to Flood Relief. It was a great night last year and should be even better this year. The cost is $25.00 per person and it starts at 6.30pm. The event is fully catered and entertainment will be provided by Maurie’s Jolly Rollers. Let me know if you want to come.

I will be away in the Solomon Islands this Thursday so will not be at the meeting. Ross Bird will be chairing ably assisted by you all I suggest. Have a good one!
