President’s Report 14 May 2012
The 17th May is Norwegian Constitution Day, a day of national celebration in Norway. Kristine will be at the meeting to celebrate the day with us and to tell us about the Rock to Reef trip. May means Red Shield Appeal and the Anne and Chris Lane are hoping that members can spare a couple of hours sometime between the 16th and 23rd May to assist with collecting donations. Please contact Chris Lane on 0457 773560 if you can help. I hope you have put the Changeover Lunch on Sunday 27th May into your diary. That is when our esteemed President Elect becomes President. It will also be the farewell for Kristine as she heads back to Norway on 7th July. Don’t forget to hand in your Community raffle tickets to Janet. A $1.50 of each ticket comes back to the Club. Surprise! Surprise! Yes it is a Club Bulletin. Sorry for not getting a bulletin out for the last month. I am sure you have missed it and had to find other reading material to fall asleep with in bed. Thanks to Anne for telling the Club about the work she does with the Salvation Army. It certainly is a great community service that the Salvation Army provides. Make sure you support the Red Shield Appeal in May. The fundraising for the Cancer Council Relay for Life continues with Judy and Janet’s Bags and Books event raising just over $480. Don’t forget to sign up for the Movers and Shakers Team for the RFL on 22 and 23 September. The next big fundraiser is the Silent Movie Night on 17th August. The smells of Asia hit me as soon as the plane landed on the tarmac. The Rotary Club of Frankston Long Island was taking 15 year 12 graduates on a schoolies that would change their lives. We were going to Cambodia. With very little sleep, we arrived in Phnom Penh and it wasn’t long before we were walking through the busy streets. Everywhere we looked there was something to see from the tangled mass of power lines above, to grand temples behind detailed metal gates. Roads were chaotic with speeding motor bikes and tuk tuks. The pavement turned to rubble beneath our feet and all of our senses were constantly assaulted by the changing of smells from food, sewerage, incense, rubbish and exhaust fumes.
